Providing an online home and point of organization for the Montgomery County Libertarian Party.

A Message From the Chair

My fellow Libertarians,
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for all of the time, money, and energy that you have put forward over the last six months in supporting your party and your candidates. Do not underestimate the value of your efforts. It is tempting in the weeks after an election to give up on the Libertarian Party or, even worse, to give up on yourself. If anyone feels that way, please call or email me.

I would like to applaud the amazing efforts of Dan Connell, our nominee for the Circuit Court. In the face of overwhelming opposition from the Democratic and Republican parties, the Washington Post, and the Montgomery County Gazette, Dan still garnered 11.5% of the vote. His work in reaching out to the community, putting yard signs up all over the county, and reaching across boundaries to get votes has been an inspiration to me.

I would also like to applaud the grassroots efforts on the Badnarik campaign. Ralph Nader outspent us by a 4 to 1 margin, but has so far only eked out 17,495 more votes nationwide. Badnarik raised less than half the money that Harry Browne raised in 2000 and has already exceeded Browne's vote totals, in spite of this being an even more hotly contested election.

Our major party opponents have become very good at the politics of fear. They will do whatever it takes to prevent people from leaving the two-party tent. I applaud every last one of you who were not scared into wasting your vote. Your steadfast refusal to vote for someone you don't want will bear fruit. Keep the faith and keep fighting for what is right.

To those who are surrounded with gloating Republicans, do not be dismayed. Ask yourself, "What have they won?" Four more years of small-government talk combined with big-government spending? Four more years of nation-building? Four more years of culture wars? If that's what they really wanted, then they deserve your congratulations on their success. If it's not, then they deserve your pity.

In summary, we're not giving up on the cause of Liberty, we're not giving up on the fight for our neighbor's freedoms, and we're not giving up on each other. Thank you again for all that you've done.

Yours truly,
Nicholas J. Sarwark

Chair, Libertarian Party of Montgomery County

Connell for the Court

Fellow libertarians,
Greetings, it is really coming down to the wire and I think we have a good
shot. I have just returned from giving an interview to Abc, they are doing a
story on the judicial election. It went very well.
Anyway, I have done a few commercials, Tony's radio show, a number of
speaking engagements and appearances, placed thousands of flyers and campaign
cards and taken out a number of adds. I have adds in all of the local paper's
coming out right before the election. Including all editions of the Gazette. I
came up with in excess of $7,000. and I have been going non-stop for a few weeks
now.
I think I have beaten the sitting judges to the punch most every time and I
think we stand a good chance at pulling this one off. Or at least a fair chance.
The sitting judges are going to attack me over the next two weeks, based
upon the 'sitting judge principle'. This is where they argue, that since they
were appointed by the governor they should be elected by the people.
The way the appointment process works is this; the Gov. appoints a
commission to recommend potential judges; this commission which is composed of
the Gov's friends than recommends the Gov's other friends as potential
candidates. The Gov. chooses one of his friends and places him or her on the
court to temporarily fill a vacancy. There is no process of Senate confirmation
or input from the people. Just the Gov. appointing the friends who his other
friends recommend.
The constitution mandates these non-partisan judicial elections. These are
not retention elections, but are contested elections.
Many folks blindly support this sitting judge principle. I have been
addressing it as of late. I had a good interview with channel 8 and have
addressed it in commercials coming out soon. My position will get some needed
air time.

I need some help and I hope that the party can be of some assistance. I
have a couple hundred yard signs that I need to place, any County yards would be
greatly appreciated. I have thousands of flyers and campaign cards that I am
currently distributing to everybody I see, if I could get you guy's to hand out
cards to friends and family etc. it would be a big help. Anyone willing to do
either of these can just call me at home, 301-349-2722 or e-mail me at
justiceconnell@aol.com. I will bring the stuff out to you, asap.

The other big thing I need is to recruit people to stand at polling
stations on election day and ask people to cast a vote for Connell. This is
huge. From what I understand the last person to challenge the sitting judges
suffered greatly due to supporters of those sitting judges campaigning at the
polling stations. I have a number of people lined up but need many more, 220
polling stations.

If possible and any of you have connections with the other minor political
parties or local groups. Get the word out to them that they are being
disenfranchised and their court is being hijacked. It breaks down to a people
verses government issue. Our founding fathers safeguarded these elections for
the citizens and the governor is unilaterally usurping this fundamental right.
The result is a Dependant judiciary, politicized and incapable of impartially
representing the people.

Thanks for everything. I will see you all soon.

Dan Connell
